Rutgers Chief Academic Officer Search Update

Dear Colleagues,

I am writing to provide an update on the search for the chief academic officer position at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, which I announced on November 6, under the title of Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs (EVPAA).  I am pleased to report that since that announcement, a search committee has been named and we have had many engaging conversations with the university community regarding the newly defined chief academic officer role.

Prior to the New Jersey Medical and Health Sciences Education Restructuring Act of 2012, the position of EVPAA at Rutgers had direct reporting lines and authority that included all academic and most administrative functions and their budgets across the university, and served as the second in command to the President.  As detailed in the position announcement, the new role for the chief academic officer has been drastically redefined by the university reporting relationships specified by the Restructuring Act. However, in announcing the new position, we did not correctly match the title of this position and its responsibilities with our current administrative organizational structure and titling nomenclature. The university’s office of Human Resources has subsequently conducted an internal title review as well as an external market comparison. Based on this additional analysis, we have determined that the title that most appropriately reflects the role of this new position within Rutgers is Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs (SVPAA) rather than Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs (EVPAA).  I apologize for any inconvenience this change may cause, and I appreciate the level of interest and engagement in assuring that we have a clear and consistent administrative structure as we move forward with this important leadership search.

Please note that the only change to the position is the title—the position description forwarded earlier remains the same.  Those who have already applied to this position will remain in the applicant pool and do not need to reapply.
